Herbert Mansford Buerkens, born Nov. 22, 1882, died Apr. 30, 1904, at the age of 22 years, 5 months and 8 days. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. B Buerkens and spent his entire life in this community, attending the public schools a number of years, after which he entered the employ of his father with the determination of mastering the machinist's trade. He applied himself energetically to the practical part of his chosen profession and at the same time took up a course of study along this line which enabled him to combine the theoretical with the practical and thereby becoming so efficient as to make himself indespensible to the establishment. His desire was to go to a larger city to connect himself with some large establishment where opportunities for advancement would be better, but in deference to the wishes of his parents he remained and applied himself with renewed energy. The future was very promising and had he been situated so his talent could have been given full scope he undoubtedly would have attained a position second to none. He was a young man of an unassuming and rather retiring disposition and in the home life he was a great help to his parents, being fond or spending a great many of his evenings in the home. His habits were excellent and while he was not a professing Christian, the members of the family have grounds for hope that during his illness he became a Christian but on account of his condition he was unable to give expression to his feelings in the matter. In his death he leaves a father, mother, two sisters, two brothers and their respective families and a host of friends to mourn.
