During the enlistment time of William Sherry, his regiment was primarily used in the extended Vicksburg campaign. Initially it was under the command of Grant during the aborted late 1862 advance. For the remainder of the campaign it was assigned to William Sherman's XV corps.

Oldest of three known children (and only son) of David F Sherry, b.1819 and Lydia, 1820-1856.

William appears on the Federal census in Mt Pulaski, IL for both the 1850 and 1860 census. On 6 Aug 1859 his father David married the widow Lavina Jane Connelly (nee Younge), who had two children of her own, Jane and George.
David and Lavina Jane had three more daughters between them..

Mary A, 1864-1945 (m.David T Adams)
Minnie, b.1868
It is unlikely that William married, both because of his young age, and because the only pension application made on him was by his father in 1884.
