Bernard Sayre Smith, 93, passed away on Memorial Day, May 26, 2014 while in home hospice and in the fellowship of his family at his beloved farm in rural Indianola.

Interment of cremains and monument dedication will be held at a later date at the North River Cemetery.

Bernard's work life began after one year of college when his father passed away at the age of 52 and Bernard was 19. He continued to live and work on the farm first with his mother and then with his wife Ethel (Casady) Smith who were united in marriage on June 8, 1945.

He was leader of the White Oak Climbers 4-H Club for 27 years, he served on the Board of Directors at Camp Wesley Woods for many years, and he was responsible for forming his one room School House, "Hoosier Row" into the Hoosier Row Community Center. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Warren Water Board when it organized and remained an elected member until 2013. He was an active member of Center Chapel United Methodist Church, Indianola Noon Lions Club, ASCS County Committee, ASCS County Measuring Supervisor, Warren County Field Assessor and a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half brother, Kenneth Smith and sister LaVaughn (Clark) Fowlie. He is survived by his wife Ethel of 68 years; son, Dan Smith of Indianola; grandsons, Wayne and Matthew Smith; and great-grandchildren Addison and Leila Smith.

It is believed that he was one of Iowa's longest serving Township Trustees serving White Oak Township for over 60 years.
