Second child born to Benjamin Tingley and Elizabeth Clark (Benjamin's second wife) in Greenfield, Pennsylvania (now located in Lackawanna County, but at the time was Luzerne County.)

Farmer. Married Susan Emeline Gardner in Herrick, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania sometime in April of 1856. That year, John Gardner married his widowed mother Elizabeth and became both his step-father and father-in-law at the same time.

Father of three girls:
Ida Jeanette (m1. Kagler, m2. Burns)
Frances Adelia (m. Bates)
Emma Luella (m. Webster)

On 30 March 1886, Friend married Catherine Cynthia Holden (1847-1939) who was Almond Rhodes' widow.

Died of Apoplexy on 19 Jan 1919 in Herrick.

Friend Gaius Tingley.

F. G. Tingley, one of the oldest and best-known residents of Herrick township, died at his home on Jan. 19 1919.

He was born Feb. 24, 1834, in Greenfield township, Luzerne, now Lackawanna County, Pa., the son of Beniamin and Elizabeth (Clark) Tingley. and a grandson of Elkanah Tingley, one of the early settlers of Harford, Pa., who came there from Attleboro. Mass in 1795

He was the twelfth chiid of Benjamin Tingley's family of twenty, and the second child of Elizabetn (Clark) Tingley's family of ten.

In April, 1856, he married Susan Emeline, daughter of John and Esther (Barrager) Gardiner, who died Oct. 18. 1882. On May 30, 1886, he married Catherine Cynthia Rhodes, widow of Almon Rhodes, and daughter of John and Rachel (June) Holden, who survives him.

In 1856 he came to Herrick township and settled on the farm where he lived the remainder or his life. When he purchased this farm it was heavily timbered and he gradually cleared it and made for himself a comfortable home. He was a noted chopper in his day, and few could swing an axe to equal him.

To F.G. and Susan (Gardiner) Tingley were born three children, all of whom are living, namely : Mrs. Ida J. Burns, of Orson. Pa.; Mrs. Frances A. Bates, of Mount Pleasant. Pa., and Mrs. Emma L. Webster, of Scranton. Pa. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; one brother. S. Benjamin Tingley, of Uniondale, Pa and two sisters. Mrs. Sarah P. Carpenter, of Carbondale. and Mrs. Eliza H. Kishbaugh, of Herrick Center, Pa.
