OBITUARY: Mrs. C. Letitia Blauvelt
Mrs. Catharine Letitia Blauvelt, widow of Gen. James H. Blauvelt, late of Nyack, died at her home in East Orange, New Jersey, at four o'clock Wednesday. The cause of death was heart disease and dropsy.
The remains will be brought to Nyack, where funeral services will be held, and the interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Blauvelt was the youngest daughter of the late General David D. Smith, and was born in Nyack. She was in the fiftieth year of her age. In her girlhood she attended the Rockland Female Institute under the principalship of the Rev. L. Delos Mansfield. After her graduation from that institution, she attended the Wright School at Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Blauvelt was finely educated, and from her young girlhood until a few years ago she was an enthusiastic musical student. She sang for a long time in the Reformed Church and Sunday School, and on many public occasions.
Mrs. Blauvelt was a very earnest worker in any cause in which she became interested and a few years ago she was at the head of the Temperance School in Nyack, which at one time reached a high degree of success.
The departed was married on August 26th, 1869, to James H. Blauvelt. The wedding took place in the Reformed Church and surpassed in brilliancy any that had previously taken place here. The Rev. Uriah Marvin, the Pastor of that church, was the officiating clergyman.
When the Nyack Rowing Associations boat house was opened, Mrs. Blauvelt's husband, General Blauvelt, was President of the organization, and Mrs. Blauvelt was Chairman of the committee which made the Fair, held in the boat house, the most successful of any ever held in the town. General Blauvelt died on August 27th. 1892.
Some time after his death Mrs. Blauvelt removed to the city, and for the last few months she has resided at East Orange.
Mrs. Blauvelt is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. O. Polhemus: and the following children: Mrs. E. J. S. Van Houten, Harry R., Walter, Grace and Jamie Blauvelt.
