Helen Frances Powell, 81, of McAlester, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at McAlester Regional Health Center. Born Nov. 8, 1932, in McAlester, she was the daughter of James M. and Addie (Newton) Berry. She graduated from McAlester High School in 1951 and had lived here all her life. While growing up, she worked in the family store, and she had worked as a cook in nursing homes. She was married to Everett Franklin Powell. She enjoyed working in her gardens and crocheting. She was affiliated with First Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathy and Jessie Harrison, of Krebs, and Sherry Powell, of Arpelar; one sister, Julia Fleck, Farmington, N.M.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, James "Stevie" Powell; four brothers, Fred, Ernest, Kenneth and Cotton, and two sisters, Betty Enberg and Emily Pepper. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. Jaime Kirkpatrick and R. J. Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
