Nelson fought with the 46th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh on 6/7 April 1862, then survived in a hospital for 10 days and died. The list of soldiers buried at Shiloh shows he was interned at the City Cemetery, Savannah, Tennessee. Grouping #199, plot #167 was Nelson's burial site, per documents on this memorial site.

He served in the same regiment and was mustered in on the same date, 13 Sep 1861, as his cousin Samuel Abraham Sleight.
