Simme "Samuel" Rozema's parents were Ekke Rosema (1830-1925) and Sijtske Anneijes (1830-1925), who married in Oldehove, Groningen, the Netherlands, in 1856. Ekke, like some other Rosema branches, had begun using the spelling "Rozema", and he used it on the birth record of all his children, including Simme. Simme used the anglicized name Samuel after immigration, but sometimes used the old Rosema spelling in early records.

Samuel emigrated to Grand Rapids, MI, arriving in New York on the SS Rotterdam II on April 26, 1889. He was naturalized on September 29, 1900. He married Anna Slager on Nov. 6, 1894, and they had 15 children (the first survived only 5 days). From about 1910-1935, the family owned a celery and onion farm near Moline, MI. After Anna's death in 1943, he married Mary Reus and lived in Grandville.
