Herald Lee Murphy, son of John T. Murphy and Minnie Wright Murphy was born April 12, 1927 in Springdale, Arkansas and died April 30, 2014 at his home in Jefferson, Iowa with his family by his side.

Lee grew up in Jefferson, Iowa and attended Jefferson High School. At the age of 15, Lee accepted Christ into his life at a tent revival in Jefferson.

Lee then enlisted in the United States Army. He served during World War II as a Medical Technician and was honorably discharged in December of 1946.

After returning from the military, Lee became a pastor at an independent church. His most love and joy was to serve Christ and preach the gospel to family and friends. He traveled all over the world sharing his love of Christ on mission trips to South America, Costa Rica, Swaziland, South Africa, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Japan, and Panama.

On October 20, 1951 Lee was united in marriage to Gloria Ruby Choate. They were the parents of 7 children: John, Roseanne, Susan, Steven, Jerry, Michelle, and Andy. They made their home in Jefferson.

At the age of 25, Lee started his own excavating business, Murphy Excavating. He did everything from digging ditches, moving buildings, knocking down buildings. His favorite job was tearing out trees, pushing them together and burning them.

Lee's greatest love was his wife Gloria. If the kids ever wanted to be in trouble, just make mom cry. If they ever wanted to see Lee's eyes twinkle all they had to do was talk about their mom. Lee and Gloria taught their children on how a good marriage works, though rich or poor, by making God first in your life.

Lee was preceded in death by his wife Gloria; his parents; daughter Susan; sisters: Vergene Friess and Helen Swartz; brother Oliver Murphy; grandchildren: Tylor Murphy and Joey Murphy.

He is survived by his children: John Murphy of Jefferson, IA, Roseanne (Brian) Costello of Jefferson, IA, Steve Murphy of Jefferson, IA, Jerry Murphy of Jefferson, IA, Michelle (Dale) Shriver of Ankeny, IA, and Andy (Judy) Murphy of Jefferson, IA; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends
