Owen—Mrs. Martha Owen, one of Jackson county's pioneer citizens, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hettie Henderson, Saturday evening, May 10, 1913, at 5:30 o'clock, aged 88 years, two months and nine days. Martha Ann Wells was born in Owen township, Jackson county, Indiana, March 1, 1825, where she resided until March, 1906, when she came to Brownstown to make her home with her daughter. She was married to James W. Owen July 30, 1848, and to their union were born two sons and three daughters—McHenry Owen, of Bedford; Cass Owen, of Redelm, South Dakota; Mrs. Sarah Johnson, of Clermont, Ind.; Mrs. Hettie Henderson, of Brownstown, and Mrs. Laura Milligan, of Fayettsville, Ark., who survive her. Her husband preceded her to the grave March 25. 1887. She became a member of the Baptist church at Leesvillo about 1868, and retained her membership there until her death. Her father, Jacob Wells, and mother, Sarah Carothers Wells, were pioneers of Owen township and reared a large family of children, who have been rather active in the affairs of Jackson county. While she is gone from the conflicts, the sorrows and pleasures of life, she will still live in the hearts of those who knew her best. Her retiring nature led her to hide her best qualities from public gaze, but they were revealed to those who enjoyed her acquaintance yet it was in her own home that her true worth was most conspicious. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her. After a brief service at the residence Monday morning at eight o'clock, the remains were conveyed to Wray's church in Owen township, where an impressive funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. L. V. Rule, pastor of the Presbyterian church at this place, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by.
