Kwon Hyeokgyu, age 6, was the eldest child of a Vietnamese mother and Korean father. He was onboard the ferry Sewol with his parents and little sister when it capsized on April 16, 2014. As the ferry was sinking, he took off his own life jacket and put it on his 5-year-old sister Jiyeon. He then went to find their parents, but never came back. Jiyeon was found and rescued by a high school student. She was the sole survivor of her family.

Hyeokgyu's body was never recovered.
