William R. "Pappy" Cates, 93, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at his home. He was born August 22, 1920, in Hopkins County, KY to the late Willie H. and Victoria (Skaggs) Cates.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and was the king of "one man's trash is another man's treasure". He worked at National Furniture, which later became Flexsteel, until the age of 74. He had six children, but became "Pappy" to hundreds. His special way of looking at life will be sorely missed, and his willingness to try and help anyone is the pride he left behind.

William is preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude (Moneymaker) Cates; sons, William V., Robin D., Loren J., and Alton R. Cates; one grandson; several great-grandchildren; and brothers, L.B. and J.C. Cates.

He is survived by his daughters, Charlie (Jerry) Williams and Shannon (Mark) Balthis; 13 grandchildren, including granddaughter and caregivers, Trudy and Harry Ramsey; 15 great-grandchildren; three great, great-grandchildren; sister, Bessie (Glendale) Lamar; and three sisters-in-law, Betty Cates, Gwendolyn Cates and Emojean Pennington; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special appreciation for their help during our time of need to Heritage Hospice, and Amedisys, and a very special "thank you" with love to his nurse, Kelly Hester.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 PM Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Tom Hubachek. Friends may visit Thursday from 2:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.
