Wendell M. Armstrong was born on January 20, 1923 in Salem, Oregon to Clifford and Deva Moorman Armstrong. He was raised in Salem, Oregon and following graduation in 1941 he went to work at Portland Gas & Coke Company in Portland. Wendell joined the US Army in 1943. After a medical discharge from the military, he began working at the Almeda Post Office in California. He married Annabel Strait on December 3, 1943 in Berkley, CA. They resided in California until 1944 when they moved to Oregon to start their family.
Wendell worked at the Eugene Post Office until moving to Salem where he continued his career with the Salem Post office. In the fall of 1945 he moved to Newberg to attend George Fox College. September of 1948 he moved to McMinnville where he began at the McMinnville Post Office, retiring on September 30, 1982, as Post Master, after 35 years of service.
He enjoyed stained glass, traveling, farming, wood cutting and gardening. In high school, he was a member of FFA. While in McMinnville he was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club. For a number of years, Wendell and Annabel enjoyed volunteering at the McMinnville Hospital. They also enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel, working with MMAP. After settling in Arizona for several years, they returned to McMinnville in 1995.
Wendell is survived by his son Terry (Diane) Armstrong of McMinnville; daughter Connie (Richard) Espejo of McMinnville; grandchildren Christine DeBon, Jennifer McMullen, Brandon Armstrong, Stefanie Church and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Annabel in 2012.
