Physician – Entrepreneur - Loyalist
Turnbull was a Scottish physician who brought a group of 1250 colonists to the British East Florida coast in 1767 to grow agricultural products for export. The ill-fated colony was on the site of the present New Symrna Beach. When the Spanish took over East Florida in 1781 Turnbull fled with his family to British Charleston, South Carolina. When the Americans took Charleston, Turnbull remained staunchly Loyalist. He remained in the city and opened an apothecary and became a respected physician. He was one of the founders of the South Carolina Medical Society, parent of the American Medical Association.
