Dan Stanborough was born in 1886 to Zachariah Thomas Stanborough and Elizabeth Wyld Stanborough. In 1913, he married Sofia Mable May. Together, they had three children: Daphne, Ivan and Carl. Interestingly, two of their children were named for Communist leaders. Family tradition is that the community of Ramsgate (where they lived) received assistance from the Communist party at the time their children were born. Sofia died in 1933.

Dan married Jane Ellen Doyle in 1939. At some point, the family moved from Ramsgate to Kogarah, living at 60 Austral Street. Jane died in 1965, and Dan died on 3 Mar 1971.
