Verlin L. Mayer, 96, of Lincoln, Neb., and formerly of Washington, Kan., died April 9, 2014 at his home in Lincoln.

Visitation will be Friday, April 11, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Ward Funeral Home in Washington.

A rosary service in Lincoln will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 10, at Roper & Son's Mortuary.

A rosary service in Washington will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Sister Marilyn Wall will officiate.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 12, at St Augustine. Father David Metz will officiate. Hannah Mayer will play the cello and vocalists will be Carla Lister and Trish Tully. Music will include "Amazing Grace", "Eye of the Sparrow", "Sara Bande", "Coming Home" and "Alleluia, Alleluia".

The pallbearers will be Eric Lister, Joshua Lister, Ash Tully, Owen Tully, Grant Heser, Jacob Heser, Nicholas Heser, Cain Dixon, Peter Dach, Michael Dach, Noah Dach, Jared Woods, Joseph Vampola and Michael Vampola.

Burial will be in the Washington City Cemetery.

Verlin was born May 4, 1917 near Clara, Kan., son of Charles and Louise (Fortier) Mayer.

On October 16, 1943, he married Gertrude Schroeder at Clyde, Kan., and made their home on the family farm near Clara for thirteen years. In 1956, they moved to Washington where Verlin worked for Standard Oil Company and drove the gas truck to Washington County Farmers for 20 years of dedicated service. In August 2002, Verlin and Gertie moved to Lincoln to be near their family.

Verlin and Gertie were long standing members of St. Augustine Catholic Church. They then attended church at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lincoln and were blessed with Catholic Eucharistic Ministry service when they became homebound.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Gertrude (both died on April 9 two years apart); parents; two brothers; and seven sisters.

Survivors include daughters, Marilyn (Pete) Dach, Pagosa Springs, Col., and Pat Heser, Lincoln, Neb.; sons, Jim Mayer and Robert (Marcy) Mayer, both of Lincoln, and Dennis Mayer, Irmo, SC; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established to St Augustine Catholic Church, Hospice with Pathways to Compassion, and St. Michaels Catholic or Eucharistic Ministry of Lincoln. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, 115 W. 2nd, Washington, KS 66968
