Wife of Alfred Brooks∼NANCY MARIE ADKINS BROOKS born Dec. 12, 1904, in Midkiff, Lincoln County, West Virginia. She was the oldest daughter of Millard Fillmore and Lelia Jane Adkins. She had four brothers; Griff, Joel, Leonard, and Sweetland Adkins and six sisters; Mollie Adkins Keyser, Faye, Beatrice, Lillian, Lucille, and Edith Adkins. Her formal education ended with the eighth grade for there were no high schools in the area at the time. She married Alfred Brooks in 1921. They started house-keeping in Accoville, WV, a coal mining town in Logan County. Within the next few years, they had two children, a daughter, Virginia Lee (b. 09 Feb 1922 in West Virginia d. 13 Jan 1993 in Sumerco, Lincoln County, West Virginia buried in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV. Virginia married Zeddie Gillenwater on 23 Dec 1944 Huntington, WV in the Saint Mary's Nurses House on Collis Ave.) and a son, James L.(b. 1924 and d. 07 May 1945. He was killed in WW II and is buried in the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines). Marie contracted tuberculosis and after being sick for about a year she went back home so her mother could care for her. Marie died at age 21 on Feb. 18, 1926, and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Hamlin, WV.
