In 1881, at the age of 15, Michael was working as a laborer in the local iron works.
On April 15, 1890 Michael married Hanorah McCarthy at the Roman Catholic Church of Rhymney, Bedwellty District, Monmouth County, Wales. They resided at 16 Manest St. in Rhymney along with Hanorah's parents, Cornelius and Norah McCarthy. Three of their children would be born here: Catherine, Michael, and Cornelius.
After the death of Hanorah's father on January 20, 1896, the family decided to immigrate to the States. On May 27, 1896, they boarded the passenger ship 'The Belgenland' in Liverpool, England and set sail for the U.S.
On June 6, 1896, they arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
They settled in Homestead, Pennsylvania, joining Hanorah's siblings who were living there at the time. They would become members of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church on Amity St. in Homestead, and have 6 more children: Daniel, John, Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth, and Ellen.
On May 10, 1905, Michael became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
On August 14, 1905, his father, Michael, died at his home in Wales. The cause of death was listed as 'senility'.
Michael had worked at Carnegie Steel, but was a retired pensioner of the Howard Axle Works when he died at his home at 140 West Locust Way in Homestead. The cause of death was listed as chronic valvular heart disease.
On Saturday, August 5, 1933, Michael was laid to rest in St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery.
