WEST HATFIELD – Donald K. Emerson of West Street, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

Donald was born Feb. 27, 1941, in Greenfield, the son of Walter S. and Sarah D. (Keyes) Emerson. He attended Greenfield schools.

Donald was an Army veteran, having served in Korea and also in Vietnam, serving as a Specialist 4th Class with the 103rd Engineering Company. Donald worked for Conrail for several years. He later worked as a custodian for the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

He is survived by a brother Gerald Emerson; a half-brother Gordon (John) Emerson; a half-sister Bea Emerson Wright; his caregiver and longtime friend Shirley H. Smith; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In respect of Donald's wishes, there are no calling hours and a private graveside service will be held at Village Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to The Heart Association , Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049; the Diabetes Association , 2080 Silas Deane Highway, 2nd Floor, Rocky Hill, CT 06067; or the charity of ones choice in Donald's name.
