HASTINGS, WILLIAM GEORGE 'GLOOMY GUS'
Gus, sometimes referred to as 'Gloomy Gus', died at his home in Chicago, Illinois. He was born ... to Tom and Clara Loftus Hastings. In 1889 the family moved to Durango, Colorado, then to Ophir and Silverton, where the father died of pneumonia in 1895...
Before leaving Silverton, Gus had worked several years in the area mines. One account stated he left Silverton in 1907 and did not return until 1942, when he came from his Denver home for the funeral of his brother, John. In the early 1920s Gus lived in Chicago and was engaged in plumbing work.
Survivors were his mother, Mrs. Clara Loftus Hastings Mullooly of Durango, cousins, Billy Maguire of Silverton and Tom Maguire of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and other relatives who were not named. The body was shipped to Silverton by the Plumbers Union and many old time friends gathered at the Maguire Chapel to pay respectful tribute. Burial was in the family plot at Hillside, beside his father and his brother. Several months after Gus' death, his mother was also buried in the family plot."
