HASTINGS, JOHN THOMAS
Mar 31, 1887 - Feb 12, 1942
Age 54 Years
John, a miner who lived most of his life in the Silverton area, died of a heart attack in Ely, Nevada, where he had gone about a month previously in search of better health. He was born in Chama, New Mexico, came to Colorado with his parents in 1889, and the family lived in Durango, Ophir and Silverton. The father of the family died when John and his brother, 'Gus', were young boys. Their mother, a very astute business woman, supported herself and her sons by operating boarding houses.
Survivors were his widow, Elva, and their daughter, Mrs. Birdie Piker of Chula Vista, California, his mother, Mrs. Clara Mullooly of Durango, his brother, 'Gus' Hastings of Chicago, Illinois, his aunt, Mary (Mrs. Mike) Maguire and his cousin, Billy Maguire, both of Silverton. John's body was returned to Silverton and the funeral service was held at the Maguire Funeral Chapel, Rev. C.B. Bryant officiating. Burial was beside his father, Tom Hastings, at Hillside, and the pallbearers were Walter Noll, William Compton, George Sitter, William Mowat, Fred Patterson and Metz Rodgers. John's brother and his mother were later buried beside him."
