SARAH LYLA MIDDLETON CARTER was born 1857 in Graves Co., KY. She was the 10th of 12 children born to Richard Greenberry Middleton, Sr. and Alsay Ann Meredith. The family moved to Ballard Co., KY by 1860 and became neighbors of the James and Elizabeth (Jones) Carter family. Lyla and her sister, America, married Carter brothers.

About 1878, Lyla became the 1st wife of John F. Carter (1854-1914).
Lyla died, before 1880, in the childbirth of her twin sons. The boys, whose names are unknown, also died shortly after birth. These twins are buried in this same graveyard, with no first names or dates. Lyla's sister America is also buried here.

This graveyard is on the farm that was owned by Lyla's in-laws James and Elizabeth (Jones) Carter
