AMERICA ANN MIDDLETON CARTER was born 1855 in Graves Co., KY. She was the 9th of 12 children born to Richard Greenberry Middleton, Sr. and Alsay Ann Meredith. The family moved to Ballard Co., KY by 1860 and became neighbors of the James and Elizabeth (Jones) Carter family. America and her sister, Sarah Lyla, married Carter brothers.
America became the 1st wife of Alfred Franklin Carter Feb. 24, 1876 in Ballard Co., KY. Alfred, born March 20, 1856 in Wayne Co., MO, was the son of James Carter and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Jones.
America and Alfred had 3 daughters:
1. Sarah "Sallie" C., born Dec. 1877 in Ballard Co., married Thomas Jefferson Menser 1896 in Carlisle Co., KY, died 1945 in Ripley Co., MO;
2. Cora, b. Aug 27, 1878, m. Henry Garnett
and her twin
3. Nora, b. Aug 27, 1878, d. 1966, married Thomas McCallister
America died between the 1880 Census and the March 25, 1883 marriage of Alfred to his 2nd wife, Martha Elizabeth Hammons. Alfred's 3rd wife was Mattie Pruitt.
Alfred died Oct. 30, 1925 in Ripley Co., MO
America's sister, Sarah Lyla Middleton Carter, 1st wife of John F. Carter, is also buried here with her twin sons.
