Excerpt from "The Monsen Family in Norway and America"

Knut Olai Monsen was born in Hamre Parish, Hordaland, Norway, 13 October 1872 and died at his farm home near Amiret, Lyon County, Minnesota, 2 April 1955. Olai spent many happy days during his boyhood swimming and diving in the fjord on which Salhus is located. He told us that the boys used to challenge each other as to who could dive deepest for stones. After he was confirmed at the age of fifteen he went to work in a tannery. The working hours were long, the work was hard and disagreeable, and the wages were poor. He must have been a happy young man when at the age of nineteen, a farmer near Bode, Iowa paid for his fare to America. In return he was obligated to work for the farmer for a year. "Olai Monsen emigrated to Bode, Iowa 3 March 1892. He was a day laborer in a tanning factory at Salhus, Norway. Immigration Records, Bergen, Norway 1892." When Olai arrived in New York he was transferred to a ferry boat which took him to Ellis Island. There it took almost all day to go through customs and each was required to have a physical examination. It was like a stock yard. People were herded from one pen to another. Many got sick and some did not pass their physical examination and had to return to their native land.

Olai made two trips back to Norway, once in 1907 and again in 1930 to see his mother. Olai worked hard in America and the opportunities were much better here for a person to get ahead. Olai and Margrete farmed at Bode until 1911 when they bought a farm five miles northwest of Milroy, Minnesota. In the spring of 1920 they bought a farm, four miles north and two miles west of Tracy, Minnesota, where they lived until their retirement. They then built a home 1 mile west and 1/4 mile south on the same farm and lived there the rest of their lives.
