John (sometimes shown as Wesley) was the first child of John Brice Riddle (b. 9 Oct 1806, Wolf Creek Twp., Mercer Co., Pa.; d. 5 Aug 1889, Mercer, Mercer Co., Pa.) and Catharine Douds (b. 1807, Oh.; d. 12 Dec 1896, Mercer Co., Pa.). In 1844, at age 8, John's eye was blinded when he fell on a knife. Later in life, his other eye weakened severely, and as a result of this limited vision and his Civil War service, he was granted an invalid pension. John was 5' 8-1/2" tall, weighed 140 pounds, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. He was a carpenter.

In 1852, Wesley moved with his parents to Mercer Co., Pa., but apparently returned to Allegheny Co., shortly after the 1860 Census. On 28 Mar 1861 in Allegheny Co., he married Annie Elizabeth Stevenson, who was born in 1843 in Sewickley, Allegheny Co., Pa., of English descent, a daughter of Thomas Stevenson (b. 1820, Pa.) and Mary M.C. Garrison (b. 1823, Pa.). John and Annie had four children—1 son and 3 daughters—Mary Maude, Frank S., Jennie L. and Lillie B. After the birth of his second child, John ". . . enlisted in the Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry, 15 Feb 1865, and served in the War of the Rebellion a short term, being discharged on 11 Jul 1865 at Lynchburg, Va." During the first months of his service (18 Feb 1865 to 10 Apr 1865), John suffered from varioloid (a form of smallpox).

At the time of the 1870 Census, the family was living in Sewickley, Allegheny Co., Pa.; and at the time of the 1880 Census, they were living in Allegheny (now Pittsburgh's North Side), Pa. A series of tragic events hit John's family in the 1880s. Daughter Jennie died in 1885 at age 18, and less than two years later, on 2 Jan 1887, John's wife, Annie, died of "phthisis" (tuberculosis), which also claimed the lives of two children, Lillie and Frank, within the next two months.

John's second wife was Mary L. Frasher, who was born on 24 Feb 1852 in Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., Pa., a daughter of Peter Frasher (b. 1819, Pa.) and Elizabeth Wallace (b. 1824, Pa.). At the time of the 1880 Census, Mary was living with her brother, Fielding Frasher, near the home of John and Annie Riddle in Allegheny, Pa. John and Mary were married on 12 Mar 1891 by Pastor J.S. Hutson of the Nixon Street Baptist Church (now First Allegheny Presbyterian Church), Allegheny, Pa., and they had one daughter—Blanche F.

On 14 Oct 1896 in Mahoningtown, Lawrence Co., Pa., Mary became the second wife of John's widowed younger brother, George Washington Riddle, and at the time of the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, they were living in Mercer Co., Pa. They were divorced about 1911. At the time of the 1920 Census, Mary L. Riddle, age 67, was living in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa., with cousins, Anna M. (b. 1869, Pa.) and Irene (b. 1876, Pa.) McClure (daughters of George and Rebecca Wallace McClure).
