Hobert & his brother Peyton were employed by the Pond Creek Pocahontas Coal Company as coal miners. They worked in the Bartley No. 1 mine in Bartley, McDowell County, WV. The brothers were among 92 men who died instantly when the mine exploded on January 10, 1940. Peyton is buried in Ivanhoe, VA.
The brothers worked together and died together, and although they are buried in separate locations, their names appear together on the left side of the Bartley No. 1 Memorial.
