Peter was the first born from his father's first of four marriages. Peter lost his mother about 1821 and had eight full siblings and seven half siblings.
His father was a substantial farmer and landowner in Perry County who died intestate in 1839. Peter, on behalf of all his siblings, petitioned the Perry County Orphans Court in 1842 regarding the disposition and division of his father's land, a document that lists all fifteen children.
Peter also became a substantial farmer in Centre and Tuscarora townships near New Bloomfield.
