Phoebe Lane Butler
Date: 1860
Location: Bath, Mason, Illinois
Widow, Phoebe Lane Butler, is listed on Entry Line #22 in her father's household, along with her two sons, Lawrence & Commadore Butler. Living two doors down, is her sister & brother-in-law, Jordan & Jemima Lane Marshall & their children...next door to them was brother, Perry Lane's household; a few more doors down, we find Valentine Lane & his wife Lucy and children

"Phebe was known to most of William Beck's children as Grandma Butler. At first it was not determined just how she fit into the Beck family. In the 1850 Illinois Census for Mason County are listed David Butler, his wife Phebe, William Beck and his three sisters, plus some Butler children. It was even considered that Phebe was a sister to the Beck children's mother and took them to raise when their mother died or was unable to raise them after the death of their father. It is now apparent that Phebe was really the mother of William and his sisters and remarried David Butler after the death of her husband. In 1843, they relocated to Illinois. It is also apparent that they were married in Pa. efore coming to Il. since Lawrence Butler was 7 years old in 1850, and was born in Pa. (1843). His sister, Caroline was born in Il. in 1844. Phebe and David lived on a farm in Saidora, Il. near Havana. She lived with her son "Banty" during her later years. The grave of Isaac Butler was found in Snicarte Cemetery. Isaac was born in Pa. in 1836, and must have been David's son by a previous marriage. In June, 1998, a book of marriages was referenced in the Mason County Courthouse in Havana, Il. In it was the announcement of the marriage (her second) of Elizabeth A. Beck to Mark A. Smith on Aug. 28, 1881 in Lynchburg Twp., near Havana. It listed her father as William Beck and her mother as Phoebe Lane. Witnesses were Alex Lane and Robert Wearrender.".
