He married Cleora Weyer on August 16, 1941. She preceded him in death on February 15, 2005 after 63 years of marriage. They lived on Wolf Creek, in Crow and moved to Eugene in 1970.
John served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in Saipan, receiving his Honorable Discharge in August of 1946.
He then began working for Snellstrom Lumber Company, and worked for various Mills: as a carrier driver and glue mixer, and expert industrial cutting blade sharpener, retiring from Rosboro Lumber Company in 1982.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting, reloading ammunition and camping, all hobbies he enjoyed with son Rich. He had a dry sense of humor and was full of many hunting and fishing stories. He enjoyed fishing the high lakes of Central Oregon and hunting the timber lands of the Siuslaw River. Favorite camping areas included Smith River, the Oregon coast and Eastern Oregon.
After retiring, John and Cleora enjoyed trips to Hawaii, an Alaskan cruise, a trip to the World Fair and train trip to South Bend, Indiana.
Until very recently, "Grandpa" lived independently and still rode his bike up and down the bike trail on River Road to run his daily errands. He was also a master at hunting a treasure at Goodwill, which was located just a block from his home. Thankfully, he was visited by several of his family over the holidays for a happy time of talking, good food and making memories.
Survivors include son, Rich (Linda), Boise, Idaho; son, Jim (Bobbe), Creswell, OR; daughter, Pam Marsh (Jim) Shelton, Washington; also, six grandchildren: (Chris, Heather, Jimmy, Brandon, Jeff, and Charlie), and ten great-grandchildren.
At John's request, no service will be held, a private military burial was held on February 20. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.
Remembrances in his name may be sent to: Meals on Wheels c/o American Red Cross, 862 Bethel Dr., Eugene, OR 97402
