Bob was born October 2, 1921 in Arlington, SD. He graduated from Brookings High School in 1939. He had over three years of education at South Dakota State College (now SDSU) in Brookings where he was pursuing a degree in entomology. He proudly enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II as a pharmacists mate on the escort carrier USS Nassau. He served most of his time in the Pacific theater of operations.
He was a Brookings businessman all his professional life. He owned the Brookings Music Store with his cousin Gordon Mydland. They sold the music store and Bob went into business on his own as the owner of the Index, office supply and furniture store. He sold the Index and worked in real estate until he fully retired. He was active in his community and held leadership positions in the Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Elks, Evening for the Arts and Prairie Repertory Theater as well as memberships in the VFW and American Legion.
He married Ruth I. Holmquist on August 7, 1948 in Hallock, MN. They were married for 46 wonderful years until her death in 1994.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church where he served as an usher, church council president, Sunday school teacher and Sunday service radio announcer.
Survivors include: two sons, Bill Madson and his wife Linell of Sioux Falls, SD and Tom Madson and his wife Cathy of Fairfax, VA; four grandchildren David and his wife Ivy, John, Brooke and Ann.
Bob is preceded in death by his son, David; wife Ruth; brothers Arden, Maurice and Glenn; sister Helen; parents Lars and Carrie.
