FREDERICKSBURG - Marvin O. Pickens died July 11, 2009, at the age of 84.
He was born Nov. 9, 1924, in Valley Wells, South Texas, to Thomas L. and Eugenia Stanley Pickens. His young life was spent skipping school to herd goats, surviving the antics of four older brothers and being loved and doted on by his sister, Nadine. He moved with his family to Kerrville, where he attended high school, played football, ran state track and learned the cattle business from his father. He joined the Navy before he turned 18 in 1942, and served on the destroyers USS Bolivar and USS Rowan during World War II.
He married his beloved wife, Beulah Johnson, of North Dakota on Aug. 31, 1943, in California. The following year, they were blessed with their first son, They eventually moved back to Kerrville, where their children were born. Marvin was employed at the USDA Station in Kerrville for 28 years. During his tenure, he was an active part of the Screw Worm Eradication Program. He worked on the weekends at the airport, where he obtained his pilot license and enjoyed many years of flying his Cessna.
Through all his years, his first passion was ranching. He was a progressive rancher in bringing one of the first gooseneck trailers and one of the first gray Brahman bulls into this country.
Marvin was a gifted woodworker and built beautiful cabinets for his family. He spent a great deal of time on the front porch swing, with a cup of coffee, carving creatures for his grandchildren. He always was ready to try his hand at fixing anything his children brought to him to repair.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all, he has left beautiful memories for his family.
Surviving him in death are his wife of 66 years, Beulah; his sister, of Kerrville; his son, of Fredericksburg; his son and wife, of La Grand, Ore.; his son and wife, Fredericksburg; a grandson and wife, of Oregon; grandson and wife, of Washington; a granddaughter and husband, of Oregon; granddaughter and husband,of Uvalde; granddaughter and husband,nrath of Comfort; grandson and wife, of Harper; great-grandchildren,. He is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his six brothers, Stanley, Ted, Warren, Lynn, Little Thomas Jr. and Little Elton.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 16, in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, with Wayne Pickens officiating.
Graveside services and interment, with full military honors, will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville.
Arrangements are under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home, Fredericksburg.
