d/o James Macpherson
Brewster was married on 31 July 1810 in Edinburgh to Juliet Macpherson (c.1776–1850), younger daughter and the youngest of four illegitimate children of James Macpherson (1736–1796), of Belleville, near Kingussie, the alleged translator of ancient poetry by Ossian. They had four sons and a daughter, Margaret Maria Gordon, née Brewster (1823–1907), who wrote the sympathetic but largely domestic biography which remains the major contemporary source for Brewster's life.
