Henry was a school teacher. He and Matilda lived on the Long Hope, which is a natural grass land straddling Ashe and Watauga counties. They were caretakers of the family cattle for a Patterson family who owned a cotton mill. Henry died a young man and was buried under a maple tree on the property. Matilda, being a tenant farmer had to move when Henry passed away. However, when she died, her body was returned here and interred beside Henry's. There is no stone that remains to mark Henry's grave but there is an indention near Matilda's that is generally thought to be the grave of the husband. According to a family historian who has visited, this family cemetery has other graves thought to be those of "slaves and Indians." The slaves would have been those belonging to the Pattersons, as Henry and Matilda did not own them.
