Born in North Ridgeville, on February 6, 1925, she lived her entire life as an active member of the community. A 1943 graduate of North Ridgeville High School, she was involved in planning North Ridgeville High School reunions.
During the war, Mrs. Vessalo worked for The Timms Spring Co. and was featured in a promotion for the sale of war bonds.
A lifetime member of St. Peter Catholic Church, she sang in the choir along with her husband John. She was also a Catholic Ladies of Columbia, and involved in the League of Catholic Women She was active in PTA and held various offices in the Altar and Rosary Society. Mrs. Vessalo also served as a den mother to her sons' Cub Scout troops.
Employed for a time in Elyria Catholic High School cafeteria, she also sold Avon products for almost a decade.
In her later years, she volunteered much of her time visiting residents in many of the local nursing homes.
She enjoyed extensive traveling with her husband and family on various trips throughout Europe, the British Isles, and beyond.
Survivors include her sons Jerome (Judy Bednarz) of Elyria and Vincent (Claire) of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughters Barbara Salna (Vytas) of Portage, WI, Sheila Petcavage (Thomas) of Elyria, and Paula Roberts (David) of Salem; 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; brother-in-law Urban Klingshirn, and sister-in-law Irene (Klingshirn) Wohlever.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1997, son, Gregory, in 2002, sisters, Catherine Barnard, Ruth Becker, Marian Malone, Irene Klingshirn and Mary Agnes Lenzer and brothers, Joseph, Charles, James and Leo Wohlever Jr.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St, Elyria. A rosary service will be said at 1:45 P.M. p.m.
Closing prayers will be Saturday February 1, 2014 at 9 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter Church 35777 Center Ridge Rd., North Ridgeville. The Rev. Bob Franco, pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Peter Cemetery, North Ridgeville.
Memorial contributions can be made to Elyria Catholic High School, 725 Gulf Road.
