James grew up in Londonderry, and worked on the family homestead. By 1780, he moved to Weathersfield, Vermont, where he owned a farm near Mount Ascutney.

James and Ann had three children, including Samuel, born August 12, 1791, who lived in Painsevill, Ohio by 1893. He died May 1850 in Lake County, Ohio.
