In "History of Windsor County, Vermont"(1891), editors Lewis Cass Aldrich and Frank R. Holmes indicate John was born in Dublin, New Hampshire. The 1850 US Census indicates he was born in New Hampshire. Other sources suggest he was born in Vermont, and lived his entire life in Weathersfield.

John lived in Weathersfield, living and working on the farm that had belonged to his father. The farm remained in the family after John's death, being run by his son, DeForrest.
On January 1, 1824, John married Jerusha Swett. She passed away five years later.

On February 10, 1832, John married Mrs. Anna Porter in Bradford, Vermont.
