Strong supporter of Queen Mary. He was responsible for the burning of several 'heretics', men and women, who spoke out against Catholicism. It is suggested that as many as sixteen of his prisoners were condemned and burned, including his own servant. John de Vere was known to be a womanizer with a scandalous reputation entangled in many unscrupulous situations, including bigamy, of which he never formally charged.
