Helen Louise Briney was born Aug. 2, 1931 in Gilliam, Missouri to Lloyd King and Margaret Elizabeth (Harrison) Richardson, the third of four children and passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013 at Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln at the age of 82 years 1 month and 13 days.
Helen moved with her mother and brother to the Crawford area in Nebraska where her mother taught country schools. Helen and her brother attended Assumption Academy, a catholic boarding school, in Chadron and graduated in 1949. She furthered her education by attending Chadron State College and earning a business degree.
On Dec. 31, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lyle Morava and to this union three children were born, Dorie, Robert and Ed.
She was blessed with a second marriage to Richard Gordon Briney (R.G.) on Feb. 8, 1958, bringing three more children, Pat, Bob and Deb into her family. And to this union, an additional son, Rick, was born.
Richard worked on the railroad and they started their married life as a "bunkcar" family. In 1960 they purchased a home in Beaver Crossing and spent the school years there while they renovated the property. During the summers Helen and the children continued to spend their time in the "bunkcar" following Richard as he worked around the country on the railroad.
Helen started collecting dolls in the early 50's and was an avid doll collector, and especially enjoyed working with her granddaughters to collect their favorite dolls. Helen also collected napkin rings and salt wells. Spending time with her grandchildren playing with musical action figures was a fun pastime. She also enjoyed searching for coins and other objects with her metal detector.
Dancing was a lifetime passion, especially polkas and in later years spending time listening to and watching Mollie B's Polka Show. Helen also enjoyed roller skating and ice skating, and was an excellent seamstress. The family set up a security camera that included the railroad tracks, so she could watch the trains go by. In her spare time, Helen made afghans for family members.
Helen was a member of the Beaver Crossing American Legion Auxiliary Unit #178, and was a long time volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln. She also attended the United Methodist Church in Beaver Crossing.
Helen is survived by her children and their spouses, Dorie and James Winchester of Oklahoma, Pat and Jim Redinger, Lincoln, Robert Morava, Exeter, Bob Briney, Deb and Randy Banks, all of Beaver Crossing and Rick and Linda Briney, Piedmont, SD, 19 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lillian "Babe" Richardson, Crawford, Jim and Pauline Briney of Florida, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
