Surprise--Monday marked the 47th milestone in the life of Mrs. Edward Dunlap (nee Mary Ellen Hemming) of East Canal Street. Shortly after noon she was decoyed away from her home in the usual manner to the home of her sister, Mrs. James Harvey, and when the proper signal was given, by hanging a white cloth from Carnahan's locust tree, the friends and neighbors gathered to the Dunlap homestead and took full possession. A sumptuous meal was spread and Mrs. Dunlap was permitted to go home, where she was utterly surprised to find about seventy persons from all parts of town assembled to wish her "many returns of the day." The repast is said to have been one of the finest that has been served on the East End for many years, and is the all absorbing theme of conversation. The Dunlaps are well liked by their neighbors and have many relatives, so that this surprise was the more enjoyable on the part of the participants, who would not object to its being repeated annually for the next fifty years.

Mary's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, August 7, 1903.

Mrs. Mary Ellen Dunlap, wife of Edward Dunlap, died Wednesday afternoon at sundown, after years of suffering with heart trouble. Born in Carrollton August 15, 1840, she was one of our oldest citizens and highly respected. She was married January 15, 1857, and became the mother of nine children, six of whom died in infancy. William, Harry and frank survive. Charles H. Hemming of Dellroy is her youngest brother; another brother, Henry, lives in Indiana; she has two sisters also, Mesdames Carrothers of Indiana and Wood of Iowa. Mrs. Dunlap was a life-long member of the M. E. Church and a kindly, well disposed woman. Her aged husband and sons have the sympathy of all. Funeral from the residence today at 2 o'clock.
