Purdue University Education Dean Emeritus Paul Alexander, 78, of 2741 N. Salisbury St., West Lafayette, died at 9:50 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at Westminster Health Care Center after a long illness.

He was born near Greensburg, on Nov. 6, 1904, the son of Frank S. and Mary Elizabeth Pumphrey Alexander. He was married in Valparaiso to Vera Bickel who survives.

Prof. Alexander was a 1925 graduate of De Pauw University, and received his master's and doctoral degrees in education from Indiana University.

He taught in Clay Township Schools, Decatur County from 1922 to 1927, and was high school principal here from 1927 to 1929. he was county school superintendent in Decatur County eight years, and high school principal in Greensburg from 1937 to 1944.

Moving to Lafayette, in 1944, he became an assistant Purdue University and became a full professor in 1953. From 1960 to 1962, he was head of Purdue's Department of Education.

He was dean of education from 1962 to 1970, when he was named dean emeritus. He taught courses in school administration, secondary education and the history and philosophy of education.

Pro. Alexander was a member of numerous organizations, including the Indiana State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Indiana School Men's Club, Department of Higher Education and National Education Association. He also was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa.

He worked on many curriculum committees during his term at Purdue, in education and other academic areas.

He was named Rector Scholar at De Pauw University, and was listed in Who's Who in american Education and Who's Who in America. He was a member of Federation Church, West Lafayette.

Surviving with the widow are two daughters, Mrs. William (Jean) Chew of Troy, Mich., and Mrs. Ronald E. (Paula Roe) Woods of West Lafayette; one brother: Dennis Alexander, R.R.4, Greensburg; two sisters: Mrs. Clarence (Ruth) Cornell, Delphi and Mrs. Paul (Mazel) Bokelman, R.R.4, Greensburg. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Alexander and one sister, Mrs. Russell (Ethel) Corya.

A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday Nov. 28 at the Federated Church West Lafayette.
