Lula Vastine LeGrand Nichols, 90, of Amarillo passed away at home on January 10, 2014. Lula was born to James and Nobie LeGrand on July 26, 1923 in Hereford. She was one of seven children. Raised in Bushland, Lula developed her spunk that she kept until her last moments on Earth.

Lula married, Cooter Young in 1943 and had two children, Betty Carroll and George William "G.W.". After five years of marriage, Cooter was killed in a trucking accident. Lula later remarried, Doyle Richard (D.R.) "Nick" Nichols, who adopted Betty Carroll and G.W., and then together had two more sons, Jimmy Doyle Nichols and Michael Newman Nichols. The Nichols family resided in River Road for over fifty years.

Lula worked as an LVN in the Emergency Room and later for Dr. Baay in Amarillo. Lula often reminisced about her love of providing care for those sick and wounded. She loved to tell a good story and she had so many to share with anyone who would listen.

In her 90 years, she made many good friends and was a faithful and long-time member of River Road Baptist Church, volunteering in their Benevolence, Ladies and Seniors programs. Lula spent much of her time with her close friends, playing Skip Bo, and solving all the world's problems over a pot of coffee.
