Carpenter

Son of a carpenter, John was a carpenter himself, and some of his sons were carpenters. He married Amelia Catlin BOHM on February 24, 1870, in Carroll County, Indiana. Five children were born to their marriage: Alpha, Arthur, Udia, John W., and Harry L.

1850 census: Indiana, Carroll Co., District No. 9. Date: August 27, 1850. Upper right corner there is the handwritten number 567, and there is the stamped number 284. John is listed on line 17, with his parents and siblings: Richard H. SMITH (52), Hannah (43), Rachel (20), Lewis (13), and Mary J. (11). John was three-years-old. His father was a carpenter. The family listed just above was his sister Eliza (21) and her husband Nathaniel Campbell (26). The family listed just below was his uncle, his father's brother James E. Smith (35).

1860 census: Indiana, Carroll Co., Clay Township. Post office: Fetterhoff Mills. Date: July 11, 1860. Listed as "Page No. 89" top left, and "253" has been written top right. Line 20. Living with his parents: Richard H. SMITH, born in New Jersey, and Hannah, age 54 and born in Ohio. The family listed directly below is his sister Mary Jane with her husband, Joseph GARST. John was 13-years old and still in school.

John and his new wife (Millie C., age 18, born in Indiana) are living with John's widowed father (Richard Smith, age 70, b. New Jersey). John and Millie reported that they had married within the last year, in the month of February. Also living in the household was 16-year-old Joel CRIPE, born in Indiana and working on the farm. (The CRIPEs were a large farm family in that area.) Down three families on the same census page is John's sister Rachel, with her husband John BEARD.

John's descent was proven from David TODD, a DAR established Patriot. John's line: son of Hannah Smith JACK (1807-1870), who was daughter of Elizabeth SMITH (1783-1856), who was daughter of Hannah TODD (1766-1822), who was daughter of David TODD.
