His father was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and came to Canada with his family about 1852/3. They settled at Minto township in Wellington County, Ontario.
His mother was born at Winterborne, Woolwich township in Wellington County, Ontario. Her parents had come to Canada from Foveran, Aberdeenshire about 1836.
His parents were married on 1 Mar 1858 at Woolwich township.
They lived for a few years at Minto township, but by 1881 had moved to Amabel township in Bruce county. There were seven children in the family. His mother died there in May 1881, aged 42.
At the time of the 1891 census his father was now living at Sullivan township in the county of North Grey with his children James 29, Jane 27, John 21, Peter 18 and George 13. His father died in 1892 as a result of being struck by the falling limb of a tree.

James married Clara Patterson on Sept 9, 1901 in Calgary. Their son, James Walter Hepburn was born there on 28 Sept 1902. James died in 1903 in Calgary along with his brother George (no descendants). They were victims of a typhoid epidemic. James infant son, James Walter, and his mother survived and that son's descendants live in western Canada.

Hepburn--At the Calgary General Hospital, on the 14th inst., James Hepburn, aged 42 years.
The funeral will take place on Sunday, the 17th inst., at 1:45 p.m. and thence to the Baptist church. Masonic Funeral.

The officers and brethren of Perfection Lodge, No. 60, A.F. and A.M., are requested to meet in the lodge room, at 1 p.m. sharp on Sunday, to attend the funeral of our late Brother, Jas. Hepburn, of Victoria lodge, No. 56, Sarnia, Ont.
