The Lord called Sophia (Sophie) Margaret Slothouber home, age 94, on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Prairie View Home in Sanborn, Iowa.

Sophie was born February 9, 1919 on a Newkirk, Iowa farm, the daughter of William and Jennie (Vander Wilt) Bomgaars. She made profession of faith at the Newkirk Reformed Church and graduated from the Newkirk High School. During high school she pitched for the softball team and, following graduation, worked for her parents in the Newkirk Store.

She met the love of her life, Anthony "Tony" Slothouber, at a young people's meeting at her church. He left to serve his country in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII, and Sophie waited for him for five years, writing him daily…fellow soldiers would also count on those letters for information from stateside. When he returned after the war they were married in the Newkirk Church on January 24, 1946. They then moved to Boyden, Iowa, where they owned and operated Tony's General Store. They would celebrate two children during their 64 years of marriage.

Sophie was involved in many church and community activities, serving as a den mother for cub scouts, teaching Bible studies for ladies' groups at the First Reformed Church, and participating as a member of the Boyden American Legion Auxiliary. She was known for her yummy baked goods, especially her chocolate chip cookies, often shared with family and friends. The collection of her personal holiday specialties will show up at future family gatherings and and continue to bless us with her love!

Tony and Sophie were tireless volunteers, helping shut-ins and neighbors well into their 80's. They spent many winters volunteering on an Indian reservation in Parker, Arizona and while there made many good friends. They also traveled to Florida and Texas and their grandchildren will fondly recall fishing trips and expeditions in their motor home.

In 2002, Sophie and Tony moved to the Sheldon Christian Retirement Home and later to the Sanborn Prairie View Home, finding caring staff and good friends in both residences.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Mary Jean, married to Elmer Schmidt of Sheldon, IA, and son, Dr. Wayne Glenn Slothouber, married to Marlene of Sioux Falls, SD. Grandchildren are Sherry and Dave Tiedemann of Hull, IA, Steve and Jill Schmidt of Minneapolis, MN, Sheila and Mark Uittenbogaard of Sanborn, IA, Scott and Amy Schmidt of Sheldon, IA, Jason Slothouber of Aspen, CO, and Megan and Kurt Kooima of Rock Valley, IA. Eleven great-grandchildren will also miss Great Grandma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony, two sisters and three brothers.

Sophie's faith in her Redeemer God was evident in every part of her life. She and Tony shared the simplicity of the gospel of God's love and forgiveness with their family and were faithful prayer warriors for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sophie's daily relationships with family and friends were a testimony to the faith she had in her Savior, and will be a legacy that is passed on to those who knew and loved her.
