DEATH: DONALD RAY OLSEN
Published: Saturday, June 29 1996 12:00 a.m. MDT
After a short illness, Donald Ray Olsen, 71, died of natural causes Thursday,
June 27, 1996, at his home in Salt Lake.
He was born April 11, 1925 in
Providence, Utah, the son of Arthur L. and Leona Bitter Olsen. On March 21,
1951, he married Lois Driggs in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. An active member of
the LDS Church, he worked as a missionary in the Northern California Mission. He
also held positions in the bishopric, High Council, High Priest Group
Leadership, and other offices in several wards and stakes. He was currently
serving as an ordinance worker at the Jordan River Temple.After receiving his
Doctoral degree he accepted a much loved teaching position in the Department of
Geology at Utah State University. While at the University, he was honored with a
Fullbright Appointment to lecture in Brazil for a year. In 1975, after 20 years
at the University, he retired and began a second career as senior geologist at
Utah-BHP, retiring again in 1987.
He is survived by his wife; three
sons and one daughter, Thomas D. (Eileen), Scott H. (Dorothy), John M. (Kelly),
and Ilene Barker (Max), all of the Salt Lake Valley; four sisters, and two
brothers, Dorothy Ewer (Bill), Norma Hansen, Afton Landre, Florence Harrison
(Steven), Arthur, Jr. (Helen), and Allen. Preceded in death by one daughter,
Sandra Lee.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 1, at 1 p.m. at the
Little Cottonwood 16th Ward Chapel, 6350 So. Rodeo Lane. The viewing will be
Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 State Street, Murray,
and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial, Elysian Gardens
Cemetery.
Don was well known as a devoted husband, a loving father and
a friend to all. His special spirit always showed through in his ready wit and
as a bright twinkle in his eyes. Neither these few words nor many more, do his
memory adequate justice. We will all miss him dearly.
