Lot Owner: William Elton Whitmore.∼Harriet Melissa Zehrung, daughter of Jacob Charles Zehrung and Caroline Gettis, was known as Hattie. She was born on Dec. 8, 1860, at Toledo, Tama county, Iowa, and died of a stroke on Feb. 7, 1931, at her home in Beatrice, Gage county, NE.

On Jan. 4, 1880 in Jewell County, KS., Hattie married William Elton Whitmore, son of Phineas Crouch Whitmore and Pamelia Frost. He was known as Elt.

Elt was born on Jan. 18, 1861, in Illinois and died on Jan. 23, 1935, at Casper, Natrona county, Wy. They were both buried at Wymore, Gage county. They lived at Wymore from about 1900 to 1920, and in Beatrice after that. They were Christian Scientist. Elt was an iceman.

Harriets obituary states that 12 children were born to this marriage and two sons and two daughters preceded her in death, five sons and three daughters survived her. Obviously something is amiss, because I have 15 names, eight sons, and seven daughters. One source listed Elton as the first child. One source does not list Harry. Obviously there is a problem with Harry, because his birth date does not fit. If we drop Harry then we have seven sons which is the requisite number, but we have seven daughters which is two over. Perhaps Claire was not counted because she was still born. That may also be the case with Florence.
