Green Lee Koger was born April 15, 1887 in Sanville, Henry Co, Va died Aug 29, 1956 in Welch, McDowell Co, WVa.
He was s/o Charles "Dillard" Koger (1861-?) and Ruth Jane Dillon (1863-1913). Photo of parents shown here.

Green Lee's mother Ruth Jane Dillon married Mar 7 , 1886 in Henry Co, Va.to 1)Charles "Dillard" Koger; they had 3 children. She married Sept 22, 1896 to 2) Abraham "Abe" Lee Spencer; they had 4 children.

1903 at age 16 Green Lee lost his left arm from a shotgun wound. His boss hired him(Green Lee) over the boss's son who was lazy. The disgunted son pointed a shotgun at Green Lee, Green Lee knocked shotgun away with his hand. Instead of killing Green Lee the bullet hit Green Lee's left arm which had to be removed.

June 4, 1917 WW I Draft Registration cards, 1917-1918 McDowell Co, WVa. Green Lee Koger age 30 is living in Twin Branch, McDowell Co, WVa with his wife Ethel and 3 children. He is working for J B & B Coal Co in Twin Branch. He was tall, medium build, gray eyes, brown hair.

1920 & 1930 Census & 1942 WW II Draft Reg Card has him living in Browns Creek, Twin Branch, McDowell Co, WVa.

Feb 8, 1948 when his wife Ethel Moore Koger died, he was living in Twin Branch, Hemphill, McDowell Co, WVa. He stayed on in Hemphill as an Inn keeper and night watchman for highway department until 1951 when he went to live with his daughter Ruby Koger Cox and her family in Tralee, Wyoming Co, WVa. He remained in Tralee until he was taken to Grace Hospital in Welch, McDowell Co, WVa where he died from prostate cancer on Aug 29, 1956.

Green Lee Koger Dies Early Today

Green Lee Koger, 69, for more than four decades, a resident of McDowell County, died at 1 o'clock this morning, in a local hospital. Death followed a lingering illness which became critical last Thursday night.

A native of Henry County, VA, he was born April 15, 1887, the son of Charles Dillard Koger and Ruth Jane Dillon Koger. He married the former Ethel Moore on July 10, 1910, and lived at Twin Branch until 1951

Mr. Koger was employed by Fordson Coal Company for 40 years and more recently with the State Road Commission in Welch.

He is survived by the following sons and daughters: Charles Koger of Buchanan, W. VA; General Koger of Carswell Hollow, Kimball, WVa; Leonard Koger of Capels, WVa; Mrs. Ruby Koger Cox of Tralee, WVa; Mrs. Dora Lee Koger Sackett of Keystone, WVa; Mrs. Ruth Koger Darby of War, WVa. Eleven grandchildren also survive.

Also surviving are a brother and two half brothers, Charles Koger of Bassett, VA. Richard Spencer of McDowell. WVa, and Luther Spencer of Martinsville, VA; two sisters Mrs. Mattie Koger Martin of Greensboro, NC and Mrs. Victoria Spencer Richardson of Mayodan, NC.

Mr. Koger was affiliated with the Davy Odd Fellow Lodge.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 11 am at the Douglas Chapel. Burial will follow at the Iaeger Memorial Cemetery, Roderfield, WVa.

The body is at the O. J. Douglas Mortuary.
