Dale J. Brown, aged 51, of Petrolia, well known semi-pro baseball pitcher in Butler county for many years, died in the West Penn hospital, Pittsburgh, at 9:18 o'clock last night following a short illness. Mr. Brown was born in Gibsonburg, O., son of the late Adnirum and Ardella Long Brown and had resided in the Petrolia district most of his life. He was well known to thousands of Butler countians for his prowess as a baseball pitcher. Possessed of a tantalizing submarine ball, Brown was one of the ace pitchers in the old Butler County and the Butler Eagle county league. He was a member of the stellar Refiners in the thirties. He was employed by the Daugherty Refining company, Petrolia as an oil treater. A veteran of World War One, he was a member of the American Legion Posts 642 of Chicora and 218 of Petrolia and of the Butler County Hunting and Fishing club. He leaves four sisters, Mrs. Ciel Ray, Mrs. Dora Dietrich and Mrs. Marcia Barr of Butler and Mrs. Alice Hilman of San Diego, Cal.; and two brothers, William Ross Brown and Seymour Brown of Warren, O. Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home, East North street at McKean street, from 7 until 9 o'clock tonight; and from 2 until 5 o'clock and from 7 until 9 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and night. Military funeral services will be held from the Thompson Funeral Home at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon with the Rev. H. A. Sayers, pastor of the Petrolia Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery.
