Per family history William went to CA for the Gold Rush. He is on record in the CA State Census in 1852 and the CA Tax Assessment in 1862. Per family history William brought back gold and it was secured/hidden on the Hankins family farm in Cleveland County.
William's youngest son, Carter, had several gold coins his father brought back from CA given to him by his mother. Carter was two when William died. Carter had one of these gold liberty head gold quarters made into a ring in the 1930's or 1940's. Grandpa Carter gave this ring to my Dad, Ira, before he died. Dad then gave the ring to my brother Larry before he died. The gold quarter was worth $2.50 or a quarter of $10.00 in the 1850's. The gold quarter is about the size of a modern dime.
William died at the age of 47 on March 15, 1872. His daughter, Mary Jane Hankins Woods, also died in March, 1872.
