George Maynard Was A Civil War Veteran

Was Born in Hampshire Township and Served in the Seventeenth
Cavalry

The late George D. Maynard, who died at his home in Watsonville, Cal., January 7, was born on the old Maynard farm in Hampshire and grew to manhood here. He enlisted in Company C. 17th Illinois Cavalry at St. Charles, Dec. 1863 and was honorably discharged Nov. 23, 1965.
Mr. Maynard was twice married, his first wife was Miss Mary Orr. After their marriage they removed to Iowa, and lived there for a number of years. After the death of his wife he returned to Hampshire to live for some years. His second wife was Elizabeth Hix. They returned to Iowa some years ago and about six years ago removed to California.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Harry, who is an attorney at Hoswell, New Mexico, one daughter, Gertrude, a school teacher in Seattle, Wash., one brother, Charles of Hampshire and one sister, Mrs. S.M. Dow, who with her husband, was with him when he died. One daughter died of diphtheria at the age of about seven years.*
He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was buried at the I.O.O.F. (Pioneer) cemetery at Watsonville, Cal.

This reads as if it were in the Hampshire Register but I really don't know. It was found in my grandmother's (May Maynard Petersen) scrapbook.
